Lauren & Nick's Backyard Wedding in Auburn, NH

It’s no secret that we love photographing backyard weddings. We remember fondly our own wedding almost five (!) years ago whenever we have the opportunity to document days like this one, and working with couples in places with so much history and meaning for them is always an honor. After first chatting with Lauren and Nick about their plans, we quickly got the sense that this wedding would be special and that prepping her parents’ house and property was a labor of love shared by their families. Watching Lauren get emotional while describing the work everybody put into making the yard wedding-ready really drove home how much having this wedding in this place meant. They had their first look right next to the pond Lauren grew up skating on during the winter, their ceremony took place adjacent to her parents’ vegetable garden, and the tent for the reception went up right in the middle of the front yard. When we showed up Lauren was beaming, getting her hair and make-up done in the living room where past family wedding photos were displayed on the mantle above the fireplace. Her parents couldn’t have been more gracious hosts and everyone was just so damn nice to us. The whole day felt indulgent in the kind way we believe that weddings should be: you’re (hopefully) only going to do this once, so do what you want to do and nothing you don’t. As Nick said, they could drink the drinks they wanted, eat the food they wanted to eat, spend as much time with their closest friends and family as they wanted, all because of the location. Nick’s family, some traveling from as far away as Colombia to be there, brought their own energy and style to a wedding that ultimately felt like a wonderful mashing of cultures in the best way. From their choreographed first dance that started slow and romantic to Leon Bridges’ “Beyond” and ended with a salsa, to the incredibly exciting ‘la hora loca’ towards the end of the night, Nick’s Colombian family roots really propelled an already energetic evening to epic levels. After an uncertain forecast opened up to clear skies that night, we took Lauren and Nick to the end of the driveway where the lack of light pollution in rural New Hampshire allowed us to capture them under the stars - something we rarely get to do but absolutely love to if we can. It’s hard to overstate how much fun we had at this wedding, how humbling it is to document these two families coming together, and how grateful we are for having met Lauren and Nick and their families in the first place. We’re so lucky to do what we do.
