Mara & Adam's Coastal Wedding in Portsmouth, RI
Last summer we photographed a wedding at the lovely Glen Manor, also in Portsmouth, where we first met Mara as the maid-of-honor to her friend Allie. We spent some of the afternoon photographing them all getting ready at Mara and Adam’s place down the road from the venue - a beautiful home built in the 1960s by Adam’s grandmother that’s remained largely original - and as lovers of unique architecture we noted how special the space was both in design and in locale. Fast forward to this spring when Mara reached out to us to photograph her wedding plans at that same spot, a plan that immediately appealed to us and had us eager to return to that very special place in Portsmouth.
Like us, Mara and Adam met during their freshman year of college and have been together ever since and while their wedding has been a long time coming the idea of hosting it with just their immediate families at their own home felt like the right way for them to do it. The plan nearly was forced inside due to weather that’s threatened weddings on every Saturday this year since the end of February but as luck would have it the rain stopped just as we arrived. The cloudy skies lent the day some drama and relief from what have been unseasonably warm temperatures here in Rhode Island lately and they were both thrilled that plan A was still on: a quick ceremony in the flower garden next to the house, a brief walk down to the beach afterwards to celebrate, and cocktails on the porch before dining beneath flowering dogwoods with their families.
Although our time with them was short, this day was everything you really need for a wedding. In the comfort of their own home they did things their way with their people which allowed everyone to relax in ways not always possible at larger venues. It was a real treat to see this space again in a new light and have the opportunity to document such a unique day in such a beautiful part of the state.
